Today, environmental issues should be high on every company’s agenda, not just those companies with obvious environmental impacts. UBM aims to minimise our environmental footprint by focusing on the areas in which we have most impact: reducing and recycling waste; using energy efficiently; implementing remuneration practices designed to encourage employees to use public rather than private transport; and promoting environmentally friendly policies in the workplace.

In 2005 UBM’s head office at Ludgate House in London won an award from the Green Organisation, an independent environmental group, in recognition of its recycling initiative which aims to recycle 65% of waste produced. Another initiative at Ludgate House has reduced electricity usage by almost 4 million kilo watt hours since 2004.

Managing environmental footprint

Monitoring and measuring environmental impacts is very important in managing our environmental footprint. UBM has a clear environmental policy and objectives, but reporting has been relatively informal to date. In 2006 we aim to develop our system of monitoring and measuring environmental impacts, particularly in relation to paper usage in our printed magazine and directory businesses.

Environmental Policy and Objectives

As a leading market information company we recognise that we have a role to play in ensuring that we manage our environmental impacts. We also recognise that we have a role to play in communicating good environmental practice outside our company.

Our environmental policy is based on four goals:
  1. We will seek to integrate the identification and management of environmental issues within our everyday business practices.
  2. We will give full consideration to the management of our key environmental impacts.
  3. We will strive to ensure that environmental improvements go hand-in-hand with reduced costs and increased efficiency.
  4. Where appropriate, we will use our position as a leading market information company/organisation to promote good environmental practice through our products and services.
In fulfilling our environmental policy we have set ourselves the following objectives:
  1. To ensure that we identify and communicate good environmental practice throughout UBM’s business.
  2. To regularly review our policy regarding the use of recycled paper within our businesses.
  3. To identify and monitor our energy usage with a view to setting reduction targets.
